What is the
XL1?
It started with a Vision: in 2002
Professor Dr. Ferdinand Piech had a dream of bringing a production car to market
that was practical enough for everyday use yet offered a low fuel consumption of
just one litre per 100Km (c.280mpg).
The vision became a reality with the Limited build XL1, hand built at the
former Karmann plants in Osnabruck, Germany. Only 250 were built, with 200
scheduled for retail sales and the final 50 shared between a selection
of hand-picked clients, the remaining few sold through a draw. Priced from
111,000 Euros, all were LHD.
What
powers this thing?
A plug-in Hybrid
system featuring a direct injection 0.8 litre two-cylinder turbo diesel engine
offering 120NM of torque, e-motor offering a further 140NM of torque from its
Lithium-ion battery and seven-speed DSG gearbox have helped the XL1 defy
conventional laws of physics and achieve VW’s goal – the combination of extreme
fuel efficiency and driving pleasure.
The XL1
managed to combine optimal aerodynamics with innovative drive concepts (for the
period) and can reputedly cover 50km in all-electric mode with zero local
emissions and needs just 6.2KW to travel at a constant speed of 62mph (100kph)
meaning just ten litres of (diesel) fuel and a 5.5kWh battery capacity enable a
driving range of up to 310 miles (500km) which is staggering, even by today’s
standards. The XL1 weighs just 795kg without a driver and is relatively small at
just 1,153mm tall and 1,665mm wide making it easy to use and
nimble.
The XL1 is built with aerodynamics at
the forefront, with an ultra-low drag coefficient (0.189 Cd) but that doesn’t
mean its impractical, it features two wing doors (a bit like a BMW i8 or
McLaren) that give considerable entry/exit ease and small, neat e-mirrors with
twin internal digital screens instead of conventional wing mirrors, electrically
controlled louvres for the air intake system and rear wheel spats to
reduce turbulence and drag.
Much of the
body is made from carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) which helps the car be
very light and also very strong.
Inside we find
simple, comfortable slightly staggered seating for two with a push button start,
manual windows with fold away handles, Garmin digital infotainment centre with
air con, parking sensors and multi-function trip data giving a pleasant air of
minimalism throughout. “Think-Blue” is the theme – designed to help with
sustainable motoring, encouraging a more energy-efficient style of driving and
route planning.
First registered in September
2015 and finished in Oryx White Pearl with Titan black Alcantara seats, this XL1
is fascinating to behold and shows just c.300 miles covered from new.
The
XL1 has remained on display in a South Wales main VW agent, owned by and
registered to the dealership the car has had just one owner from new. There is a video of this very car on
Youtube, created for some PR of the car being used to go to Ikea, which was the
majority of the mileage the car has covered.
Presenting beautifully as one might expect given the tiny mileage
covered and sole main dealer owner, the car is offered for sale at a fraction of
what it cost new and at an appealing level given the last four sold made around
the £100,000 mark.
The history file includes
the chassis specific metal XL1 folder, V5C, service book with two stamps, the
last in February 2022 at 243 miles, a boxed XL1 hard back book, XLR storage
instruction book and XL1 technical background information brochure. The current (and only recorded) MOT is
valid until 24th July 2023 and recorded no advisories at just 256
miles.
