UK-supplied new; RHD; four owners from new; loads of history; rugged
machine ideal for trials; recent new wheels; comes with Carcoon
An
interesting example, as its not the usual Australian or New Zealand import, this
1924 Canadian-built Buick (marketed in the UK as a McLaughlin-Buick) is a
24-4-35 model indicating its year, number of cylinders and body style - in
this case a five-seat tourer which was sold new in the UK.
The
British-supplied cars had a wooden dashboard as opposed to a metal dash, the '24
cars having a Packard-style radiator, detachable head and four-wheel
brakes.
It was first registered on 1st January 1924 with the Middlesex
registration MH 1769 which remains transferable. It was imported through NLR
Easton Ltd, of Regent Street, London who were the main importers and its first
owner was a Mr F Lawrey from Cornwall.
It served as a taxi for many
years, a job for which the rugged Buick was ideally suited, and was originally
maroon in colour.
Its second owner, Mr Eric Farrar also of Cornwall,
restored the car in 1976, passing it to an interim owner for a few months before
the vendor acquired it in late 2007, 16 years ago -
just four owners from new as far as we can see.
He reports that
the radiator was rebuilt in 1998, it had a new hood in 2007, a stainless exhaust
in 2008, a valve grind and new head gasket in 2011 and a replacement exhaust
manifold the same year.
It has been living locally and photos and awards
on file show that it has been well loved and well-used. It comes with a
useful copy handbook and all four wooden wheels have been renewed
within the last year (although we can't see an invoice for them) and we
have enjoyed driving it around on site.
It would make a useful
addition for the Vintagent with a growing family, or someone looking
to experience pre-war motoring without breaking the bank.
