Last of the MG
T-Series and arguably the best, the TF was introduced in October 1953. Although
mechanically very similar to its TD predecessor, the provision of a shorter
radiator, revised wing line and faired-in headlamps lent it an altogether
sportier air.
Equipped with
rack-and-pinion-steering, independent front suspension and four-wheel drum
brakes, the TF was initially powered by a 57bhp 1,250cc XPAG four-cylinder
engine but was offered with a 63bhp 1,466cc XPEG motor from November 1954
onwards. Production ended early in April 1955 after 9,600 TFs had been made, of
which just 3,400 were the larger 1500 version, virtually all of them being sold
into the American market.
This TF 1500 was made
for the US market in January 1955 and seems to have been in
single family ownership in Fort Wayne, Indiana, from 1970 – 2010 when it was
imported to the UK. Our vendor acquired the car for his collection in July 2014.
Finished in Cream with matching beige Mohair
hood and side screens, the car looks well on its painted wire wheels. Inside we
find a nicely mellowed Oxblood leather interior with matching dash top and door
cards along with useful lap-belts fitted.
The
history file includes the V5C showing two former UK keepers prior to our vendor;
two Indiana Certificates of Title; Indiana statement of inspection dated 1971;
2010 import papers; owner’s operation manual and three old MOTs. There are also
a selection of bills for sundry parts purchased including a hood and side
screens in 2014, a starting handle and fuel pump in 2011, a couple of bills for
minor works carried out in 2011 and the purchase receipt from the US owner to
first UK owner in 2010.
An Indiana
Certificate of Title dated April 2002 showed the mileage to be 71,289 at that
time so it seems that the car has only covered around 850 miles in the last 22
years. The last MOT was issued in April 2012 with no advisories recorded and it
has only covered some 150 miles since.
Starting
on the button, the TF runs well and feels lively – interestingly, it is the
one car the vendor felt most inclined to keep after a last blast on country
lanes prior to being transported to Brightwells…
