Few European cars of the 1950s possess quite the style and
elegance of the Borgward Isabella Coupe. Beautifully proportioned and highly
advanced for its day, the Isabella helped establish Borgward as one of Germany's
most ambitious manufacturers, while the rare Coupe variant with
a shortened roof line is widely regarded as one of the finest automotive
designs of the period.
Manufactured in 1959 and first registered in the
UK in July 2021 by the current vendor, this striking two-door Coupe has
benefitted from a comprehensive restoration carried out over the last five
years. The vendor has supplied a fascinating photographic record of the work
undertaken, including images of the bare bodyshell mounted on a rollover jig,
demonstrating the thoroughness of the restoration and the considerable
investment made in returning the car to its current condition.
Showing
13,975 miles on the odometer, the Isabella presents beautifully in bright red
with a contrasting cream roof, a combination that perfectly highlights the
graceful lines of this elegant Coupe. The quality of the restoration is evident
throughout, with the exterior displaying the sort of visual impact that only a
freshly restored Isabella can offer.
The interior has received equal
attention, with the seats and door panels freshly retrimmed and the wooden
dashboard and trim expertly re-veneered, creating a cabin that feels every bit
as special as the exterior promises. It is a wonderfully inviting place to spend
time and a fitting complement to the car's stylish
appearance.
Mechanically, the car has been treated to a full engine
rebuild, while a stainless-steel exhaust system has also been fitted. New
bumpers complete the restoration and contribute to the car's exceptionally smart
presentation. The vendor advises that the only remaining task is the fitment of
a boot carpet, which is understood to be readily available from specialists in
Germany or could easily be manufactured locally should the next owner
wish.
Having arrived from the sun-drenched roads of Spain only last week,
the Borgward appears ready for immediate enjoyment and has been starting readily
on the button during its time with us for photography and video
purposes.
Rare, elegant and beautifully restored, this Isabella Coupe
represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a significant piece of 1950s
automotive design history. With the hard work completed and the restoration
documented in photographs, it offers all the charm and exclusivity of one of
Germany's most attractive post-war coupes. A truly beautiful motor car that is
sure to attract admiration wherever it goes.
