Produced from
1990 to 1993, the Alfa Romeo Spider Series 4 marked the grand finale of one of
the most celebrated roadsters ever made. Tracing its lineage back to the iconic
1966 Duetto of The Graduate fame, the Series 4 successfully modernised
a classic 1960s chassis for a new decade.
Pininfarina returned to refresh the styling, giving the Spider a
much cleaner, more cohesive aesthetic than the previous model. Gone were the
prominent black plastic spoilers and bulky rubber bumpers of the Series 3,
replaced by sleek, colour-matched front and rear bumpers, full-width tail lights
integrated across the rear panel, power-adjustable side mirrors and chic
minimalist bodywork that paid homage to the original classic Sixties lines.
While a 1.6 version was available, most Series 4
models were powered by Alfa’s fabulous 2-litre Twin Cam engine paired with Bosch
Motronic electronic fuel injection and producing 124bhp. Mated to a five-speed
manual gearbox and driving the rear wheels, this setup delivered smooth,
reliable performance and a lively exhaust note.
The interior was classic Alfa, with driver focussed instruments and a
perfectly positioned gear stick for flicking up and down the ratios, with modern
luxuries like electric windows and power steering making it considerably more
refined than its predecessors.
Just over 18,000
S4 Spider 2.0 models were made before production came to an end in 1993, all in
LHD, although many of those which came to the UK new were converted to RHD by
Alfa Romeo GB.
First registered in April 1991,
this particular S4 Spider 2.0 is one of those RHD conversions. It is showing
84,160 miles on the clock and comes with a large file of invoices to show
regular servicing and upkeep throughout its life.
Recent expenditure of note includes a new brake servo, clutch master
cylinder and power steering hoses in September 2016; full service, new fuel
pump, fuel filter and ultrasonic cleaning of all the fuel injectors in June 2020
at 80,944 miles. The compressions were all checked and declared good at the same
time.
Our vendor acquired the car in July 2020
and she has covered some 3,000 fine weather miles in it since, telling us that
it has been kept garaged when not in use. An invoice shows that it was last
serviced in June 2022 at 83,338 miles. It has also been checked over annually at
MOT time by the same local garage.
An indoor car
cover is included, along with a hood cover (see photos). An alarm immobiliser is
also fitted in conjunction with a Tracker theft recovery system. The current MOT
is valid until July 2027 and there are also 26 old MOTs on
file.
As you can see in the photos, this Alfa
looks exceptionally smart for its year/mileage with excellent Nero black
paintwork and a commendably clean and tidy interior.
Driven some 40 miles to the sale, we are told that the car drives as
well as it looks and it has certainly been starting promptly and running well as
we have moved it around on site, with healthy oil pressure, no warning lights
and working electric windows.
All this glamorous
Spider needs now is a fortunate new owner who can zoom around in it over the
remaining summer months, shades on, roof down, looking as cool and stylish as
the car itself. We like this Spider a lot and we are sure that you will too, so
