1978 Dennis D-Series Fire
Engine; complete with most of its original fire fighting equipment; seen 271
call outs in its life; showing just 28,613 miles; horns, bells and flashing
light all work; remained in service until 1992; stainless steel
exhaust
A charming and highly
characterful example of a Dennis D-Series fire engine, finished in traditional
fire engine red and powered by a 3,540cc diesel engine. First registered in May
1978, this historic emergency vehicle offers an interesting piece of British
fire service history.
The Dennis entered service in
1978 with Moreton Hampstead in Devon, carrying the call sign 271, and remained
in service until 1992. During its working life, it was involved in a road
traffic accident and subsequently rebuilt and repainted. Unfortunately, on its
return to service it was involved in a further collision in the Wray Valley,
requiring another rebuild of the front end. It continued in service before being
transferred to the reserve fleet approximately two years later. However,
following a decision to reduce the number of reserve appliances, it was
eventually sold.
In more recent years, the
vehicle has appeared at classic vehicle shows and events around the country. It
remains a very complete example, accompanied by original equipment including
helmets, hoses and ladders. The flashing lights, bell and two-tone horn are all
reported to be working.
The odometer currently
displays 28,613 miles, which the vendor believes to be correct. The Dennis has
had 10 keepers in total and has been in the current ownership since March
2022.
Although trailered to the
sale, the vendor had been happy to drive the vehicle over the 100-mile journey,
but was persuaded by his family not to do so.
An engaging
opportunity to acquire a complete and evocative former fire service vehicle,
with an interesting operational history and plenty of period equipment to
display at shows and events.
