1953 MG TD MkII
Original UK car; bundles of history going back to the 1970s, body off restoration by a previous owner; recent engine rebuild along with the gearbox and front suspension in 2017; complete weather gear
Following on from the successful Post-War TC, the TD arrived in 1949, introducing many much-needed refinements. The principal of these included independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering, greatly improving the driving experience.
From 1951, a MkII version was introduced with a more powerful 60bhp engine and 82mph performance. Great fun to drive, the MG TD had a quirky mixture of Vintage looks with ‘50s styling cues and sold like hot cakes, being replaced in 1953 by the TF.
This 1953 TD MkII, chassis number 29477 was therefore one of the last TDs built, leaving Abingdon on 16th July 1953.
As its original buff logbook confirms, it was registered to Parkside Garage of Coventry, spending its formative years in the Leicester/Nuneaton area before a move to Surrey in 1968.
Finished in British Racing Green and Magnolia hide interior, it comes with a huge history file extending back to the 1970s, its most recent owner acquiring the car through Brightwells in 2011 from a celebrity musician (even we have heard of him!) and been thoroughly well cared for since.
Detailed notes are included of all care and maintenance by the current owner, who has covered just 1,700 careful miles over the last 10 years. In fact, records show it has only covered some 15,000 miles over the last 42 years according to its 26 old MOTs on file.
Also included in the file is an owner’s manual, parts catalogue and a large number of invoices.
As one would expect of such a pampered example, it appears to be in very smart condition, having had a body-off rebuild commissioned by its previous owner.
The vendor has improved the car yet further, adding a steel billet Phoenix crankshaft, new camshaft and flywheel ring gear – the components being carefully balanced prior to reassembly. In addition, a Brown and Gammons rear crank seal conversion has been added this year.
Its current owner clearly enjoys improving his cars, including a rebuilt gearbox with all new bearings in 2017 and a full front suspension rebuild plus front and rear brake cylinders, again in 2017.
Every engine ancillary has been stripped and rebuilt along with a new SU fuel pump just a few months ago.
Complete with full weather gear including a tonneau, a stainless exhaust and Kenlowe fan, this very well-prepared TD is ready to go, even down to a new pair of front tyres within the last 150 miles.
TDs are great fun to drive, combining Pre-War looks with a surprising turn of speed and civility.
