1956 Morgan +4 Drop Head Coupe

Rock solid project car just in from the States; desirable DHC model; recently running; loads of potential

The introduction of the Plus Four gave the four-wheeled Morgan the performance it had always craved. With precise handling and light weight, the car soon became a winner in rallies and on track, particularly when the warmed-over TR2 engine became 'standard' fit (no pun intended!)

This 1956 example was despatched from Pickersleigh Road on 15th May destined for the New York dealer Fergus Imported Cars. The factory build certificate tells us it was painted Ivory with black leather, but was otherwise to standard spec.

It was living in Canda in the 1970s according to a letter on file from The Morgan Motor Company, although by this time, its original engine had been swapped for a TR3A unit. Notes tell us that it was purchased as a wreck in 1974 and ground up restored over the next 12 years. There are a few photographs on file that show what we believe to be the car when it was collected, as a project at this time. A worksheet from JDS Engines Ltd shows that its engine was comprehensively rebuilt in 1987.

As is so often the case, the project did not reach completion, the part completed project arriving back in the UK in 2016. It was correctly imported with all duties paid and comes with a NOVA number and the aforementioned factory certificate which should be sufficient to get an age related number for the car once completed.

The Drop Head Coupe is always something of a rarety, the factory taking a great deal longer to complete the more complex coachwork than the standard two-seater body.

With a ready supply of parts, simplicity of construction and huge amounts of knowledge and support, this project looks very worthwhile. Time spent on this will be amply rewarded with a car that is very pretty, great fun to drive and rapid into the bargain.
