Description
Early '72 model 350 with extremely rare four-speed manual
transmission; smart hood and a tidy example that was owned by Jay-Kay of
Jamiroquai - includes magazine feature with him and the car on
file
Dating from January 1972, this early R107
series Mercedes-Benz 350SL is finished in White, and sits upon its original
steel wheels with polished hubcaps. We also note inclusion of the removable
factory hard-top in white and fitment of a black Mohair soft-top with plastic
rear screen.
Under the bonnet, we find the
3.5-litre M116.980 SOHC V8 engine featuring Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection and
produced when new, 197bhp and 286NM of torque driving the rear wheels here, via
the rarer option of four-speed manual transmission which is arguably more
engaging than the usual three-speed auto more often found.
Inside, we find black leather with the earlier style seats without
head restraint, walnut dash, heated rear screen and retro-fit JVC radio/CD
player. This example was not specified with rear seats so benefits from a
carpeted rear luggage space instead.
The car
shows 138,523 miles and presents well. Bidders please note, there is a crack to
the rear screen on the removable hard-top, and we were unable to release the
soft-top at the rear to lower the roof, although this just looks to be sticking,
the release handle and mechanism seem to work correctly and the latch key is
present.
The history file includes the V5C
recording ten former keepers to the current of nine years, photos of the car
being featured in a Classic Cars magazine feature with cut outs from the
magazine too revealing the car belonged to avid motor-head, car collector and
music legend Jay-Kay from Jamiroquai.
In
addition, there are a selection of bills on file, with recent works including a
£1,550 spend in 2017 on a new water pump, radiator, hoses and new exhaust system
and other more historic bills dating back to 2010. We also find 16 old MOTs
(showing only c.2000 miles covered in the last 10 years) and some DVLA
ownership history with some copy old V5’s including some docs confirming
Jay-Kays ownership in the mid 90’s when at the height of his
career.
Ready to be enjoyed with a clean MOT
valid until November 2023 this looks to be a lovely example that presents well,
feeling very eager with its manual box showing some celebrity ownership.
