Older restoration in super condition; full rewire and stainless steel
exhaust in 2012; driven 30 miles to the sale; ready to enjoy
A direct
response to the Ford Model Y and heavily based upon it, the Morris 8 was
launched at the 1934 London Motor Show. Small and affordable but with room for
all the family, it was far more suited to Britain's increasingly crowded roads
than the larger models that had formerly underpinned the Morris
range.
Available as a two- or four-seat tourer
and a two- or four-door saloon, the 8 was powered by a 24bhp UB Series 918cc
four-cylinder side-valve engine, driving through a three-speed box with
synchromesh on the top two gears. Capable of 60mph and 40mpg economy, it also
benefited from hydraulic brakes and a good level of
equipment.
It sold strongly until it was
replaced by the very similar Series 2 in 1938, proving such a success that it
enabled Morris to regain its position as Britain's largest motor
manufacturer.
First registered in London in
June 1935, this Morris 8 Series 1 Two-Door Saloon comes with very little history
but has clearly been well-restored at some point in the not-too-distant past. A
couple of invoices show that it had a fair bit of work in 2012 including a
complete rewire; new flashing indicators with hazard lights; brake overhaul; new
stainless steel exhaust; windscreen wiper motor reconditioned; full service with
various new parts. A battery cut-off switch has also been discreetly fitted
inside the dash.
Another invoice shows that
the previous owner acquired the car from West Riding Classics in 2013 for
£7,500. Our vendor acquired the car in 2016 and has fitted it with a new
battery, done some work to the brakes and has used it occasionally for local
shows. Four old MOTs imply that the car has only covered about 600 miles since
2011.
As you can see in the photos, the car
looks super and has been starting promptly and running well as we have moved it
around on site, with good 35psi oil pressure. Driven 30 miles to the sale, it is
ready for a new owner to enjoy.
