Description
Rare LHD 3.0 24-valve R129 with removable hard-top from 25 year
ownership that's spent much time in Portugal
Supplied new by Mercedes-Benz Ltd, Piccadilly showroom of London,
for Diplomatic and Tourist sales in April 1992 this R129 Generation of Mercedes
SL comes to us in somewhat rare and desirable 300SL-24 guise and is finished in
two-tone Silver with matching removable factory hard-top with contrasting black
Mohair soft-top roof underneath and sits upon its original 16” eight-hole flat
faced alloy wheels.
Under the bonnet, we find
the 3.0 litre M104 DOHC 24-valve inline-six cylinder petrol engine which
developed 228bhp at a heady 6,300 rpm driving the rear wheels via four-speed
automatic transmission.
Inside the cabin of
this left-hand drive example, we find a black leather interior with matching
black carpets, dash and centre console with walnut trim, electric windows,
electric seats, two-stage heated seats, electric mirrors, heated rear screen
(for the hard-top), electric roof operation, electric roll bar, automatic
climate control with AC, original period Motorola car-phone and after-market
Clarion radio/CD player. This car does not feature the optional rear seats,
instead there is an ample parcel shelf providing useful additional luggage
space.
The car shows 241,511Km, although our
vendor, who has owned the car some 25 years assures us that the car clicked over
onto 240,000Km one day instead of 140,000Km which looks to have been the case
sometime in 2012/13 when the Mots jump from 139,114Km in 2012 to 240,326Km the
next year. Our vendor
purchased the car in Portugal from friends in 1998 and continued to enjoy the
car out in there at their second home for some of the 25 years he has owned it
ensuring the car received limited, dry use only with only c.5,000Km being covered since
2006.
The car presents well, although there
were a couple of bits of loose trim namely the driver’s door pocket lid and
walnut trim for the electric driver’s seat which are both common R129
foibles.
Within the history file, we find the
V5C showing just four former keepers to our vendor, the owner’s pack and service
booklet recording some 14 service stamps, with six of the earlier stamps from
Mercedes-Benz of Lisbon with the last stamped service in 2004 at
132,500Km.
In addition, we also find some 26
old Mots, the current Mot valid until March 2024 recording no advisories, two
old style V5’s, numerous old tax discs and historic Equifax data check from
1997.
Ready to be enjoyed this is a rarer
variant of the ever-dependable and popular R129 Merc SL with a potent and
high-revving six cylinder engine – Lots to like indeed.
