Here is
something you will not be seeing every day.
Originally a 2010 Defender 110, distributed by Stratstone of
Gloucester as chassis SALLDBHS7AA796089, this has now been formally identified
as a Land Rover Defender 6x6 HC Pick-Up, chassis
DVLASWA3971703704.
All paperwork, reports and
confirmation from the DVLA concerning the above are included within the sale of
this vehicle and it is registered as 2017 on the V5C.
The 6x6 HC Tandem Walking Beam suspension is a heavy duty tandem
axle that can be installed onto a donor 110 or 130 chassis, without the need to
change anything on the front end of the body, chassis, gearbox or engine. It has
been developed by Quantec AWD who detail a great deal of info regarding these
conversions on their website - https://quantecawd.co.uk/wordpress/
The
general process for conversion starts with the removal of all rear suspension
and associated drivetrain. The ladder frame chassis structure is then augmented
with a rear suspension sub-frame which carries the tandem walking beam
system.
The sub-frame is a
fabricated structure that once fitted increases the structural support and
provides attachments for the shock assemblies and trailing arm. The walking beam
assembly is mounted to the arm between the pair of rear wheels, which enables
the load to be evenly distributed to give optimal transmission of wheel torque
to the ground.
Quantec have invested a
significant amount of money and time to develop this system and have published
various clips online of this vehicle displaying its capabilities. It claims to
have vastly improved vehicle stability off road, a 3000kg load capacity,
permanent 6-wheel drive, dramatic improvement of slope climbing and angle of
departure and also of the ride quality at speed as most movement falls on the
walking beam.
In summary, this is a unique
vehicle and although could be used for all sorts of purposes, it would also be a
highlight at Land Rover shows too. You could always go to Quantec and ask them
to convert yours, but why not buy one already
done?
