Description
Earlier S1 Elise supplied new to Jersey; removable factory
hard-top (and standard soft-top); just 31,773 miles - huge fun in a small,
nimble package
Supplied new by St. Helier Garages
Ltd of Jersey, Channel Islands in July 1998, this neat Lotus Elise Series 1 is
finished in Grey with black soft-top and desirable removable factory hard-top
too and sits on its original five-spoke 15” alloy wheels shod with Toyo Proxes
tyres.
Under the rear deck we find a small boot
area with the loose soft-top and the beating heart of this lightweight star, the
1.8 litre Rover K-Series four-cylinder engine which develops 118bhp driving the
rear wheels via five-speed manual transmission. Performance was astounding given the car
weighs just 725kg with a low centre of gravity, lightweight GRP construction and
superb handling. No wonder the Elise is rated by many as the best
sportscar ever made.
Inside, we find the
typically spartan interior with slim, black leather sports seats, manual windows
and not even a stereo. The roof bar
is pictured in the footwell – easily removed and a necessary removal for fitment
of the hard-top.
The car remained in Jersey
until our vendor bought it to the UK in November 2022 since when it
has seen limited use. The car
presents well although there are some localised areas of micro-blistering to the
hard-top and passenger door as pictured (not uncommon with this model and with
fibreglass cars in general).
Given that the car
has spent most of its life on a small island, its no surprise that it has
covered very few miles – the odometer shows 20,954 miles but it had a
documented speedo replacement in 2001 at 10,819 miles by the supplying Lotus
dealer making the total mileage just 31,773.
The history file includes the V5C showing just one UK owner (our
vendor), the owner’s pack with manual and service history booklet which shows
seven stamps inc. PDI, the last in 2005 at 11,696 miles (22,515 miles).
In addition, we also find
supporting documentation for the speedo change and an array of bills for parts
and maintenance including purchase of a Piper manifold and intake in 2008, HMRC
correspondence, Cobra alarm certificate, current MOT valid until October 2023
recording one minor advisory for damage to a mirror and also a dyno run
print-out from Jersey showing the car made 123.6bhp in 2008.
Ready to be enjoyed, perhaps improved a little (the localised
micro-blistering), or tucked away as an investment – low mileage Elise S1’s
don’t come around that often...
