Description
A very fit JAP OHV-engined three-speeder; Barrel-Back; recent engine
rebuild; electric start; sounds a treat
This fit and healthy
Barrel-Back Super Sports left the factory in May 1937 - a time when it was
sharing the factory floor with the recently introduced 4/4
four-wheeler.
Originally fitted with a Matchless engine, somewhere along
the way its engine was swapped for a JAP unit which is the
form in which it was acquired by well known Three-Wheeler Club member Ken
Galloway in the 1970s.
A senior Perkins Diesel engineer, he embarked on a
painstaking restoration over the next 20 years, our vendor acquiring it from him
in 2019.
The vendor has taken good care of the car, using it for
hillclimbs and plenty of road use. In 2022, the LTOWZ JAP engine had a full
engine rebuild by Peter Thompson, a JAP expert who fitted new pistons, valves,
springs, guides, water-jacket plugs, unions and push-rods. The clutch has
also been relined, the car has been converted to 12 volts and some chrome
plating undertaken where necessary.
There are some useful spares included
- a starter, a rebuilt oil pump and a clutch and clutch cover.
These
later three-wheelers are easier to live with than the more primitive earlier
cars with no reverse gear. They are easy to manage, plenty fast enough and bowl
along in a relaxed and efficient manner.
This car comes with an extensive
library of the marque and a decent history file including the notes written by
Ken Galloway during its restoration.
The rousing sound track of this
very smart example is complemented by the whiff of Castrol R, delivering an
experience few other cars can offer.
