Lot Ended
Description
Restored by Charles Ware in 2021 with many new parts; few owners;
large history file; recent service; driven 30 miles to the sale; lots to
like, little to do...
One of the
best-loved Morris Minor variants, the Traveller estate was introduced in 1953.
Equipped with the same independent torsion bar front suspension and
rack-and-pinion steering as its saloon sibling, it proved just as enjoyable to
drive. With foldable rear seats and a spacious load area, it still makes
a remarkably practical classic that is just as happy carrying hay bales and
logs as it is children and wet dogs.
First
registered in Bristol in July 1971, this Traveller dates from the final year of
production and has the later 48bhp 1,098cc engine which gave it a top speed of
77mph with 32mpg economy. It has had just four owners from new, according to the
V5C, our vendor acquiring the car in June 2020 from a Dorset gent who had owned
it for the previous 21 years.
Clearly a
much-loved machine, it comes with a large history file showing regular upkeep
over the last 30+ years. This includes a major overhaul in 1995 which cost
£2,500. Between 2016 and 2018 it had another major bout of expenditure with
bills for parts alone amounting to some £2,300 – brakes; suspension; fuel pump;
window rubbers; seat belts; service items etc.
Our vendor paid £10,000 for Daisy (as she is affectionatley
known) in 2020 and promptly treated her to a full service and
check-over which included having the front brakes rebuilt, the windscreen wiper
mechanism rebuilt and a new set of Toyo tyres and inner tubes fitted, the
mileage at this point being c.88,900.
In June
2021 she sent Daisy to Minor specialist Charles Ware of Bath with
instructions to go right through her and fix anything required. This
ultimately cost £4,650 and included: new timing chain kit and various engine
gaskets; new clutch kit; reconditioned steering rack; new steering and
suspension bushes; new engine mountings; new propshaft UJ; heater overhauled;
Broquet fuel catalyst fitted to make her suitable for unleaded petrol plus
much else besides.
The body and chassis were
also repaired as required and all box sections/cavities were waxoil injected.
The mileage at this point was c.91,400 and Daisy has only covered 1,800
miles since. In August 2022 she had another service and the suspension was
greased. An indoor car cover is included along with an owner’s handbook and a
Haynes manual.
As you will have gathered by
now, this pampered Traveller is fighting fit mechanically with many new parts
and was driven 30+ miles to the sale. The structure is sound, the woodwork looks
to be in good shape and it has a smart interior. All that lets the side down is
the paintwork which has deteriorated in a few areas due to the car being kept
outside. Get that sorted and you have the makings of a very fine Traveller
indeed...
