Just two owners and 28,993miles from new; rare and exciting opportunity to own this miraculously original Datsun 280ZX
First registered in May 1979, this 280ZX was owned from new by a Mr Hirst, a well-known figure among the Z community who kept his Datsun in excellent order. The service book shows no fewer than 29 service stamps, the last in May 2007 at 27,971 miles, giving an average service interval of less than 1,000 miles - pretty obsessive by any standards!
After her husband passed away, Mrs Hirst sold the car to our vendor in 2008, not long after having a slight mishap with her garage door which scraped the passenger front wing and door of the Datsun (see pictures). Our vendor, who is a great lover of all things Z, never had the scratch repaired as he did not want to take away from the car's originality, a theme which he has continued over his 16-year ownership, leaving us with possibly the most well-kept and original Datsun 280ZX that may have ever been offered at auction. Polished more than driven in recent years, it has still only covered 28,993 miles from new.
Sat in our classic garage in a beautifully preserved state, this 280ZX seems to be something of a time capsule; sliding into the interior is like going to have a look at this car as it sat in the Datsun showroom some 45 years ago; the condition is uncanny for its age, you’d be hard pressed to find even the smallest imperfection.
The blue cloth seats bordered with grey vinyl are the perfect colour combination for this 280, the blue dash complements the blue carpet that has been protected by the original floor mats for 45 years, the instruments all appear to be working as they should bar the fuel gauge which may be as simple as a blown fuse.
On the exterior the blue theme continues, the sharp bodywork finished in blue metallic. The bodywork overall looks to be very straight, the paintwork does show some signs of its age with some micro blistering present over some parts of the body (see photos). Some paintwork is evident on the bonnet, drivers front wing and door and possibly the rear quarter and boot lid, this is believed to have been undertaken by Datsun as a possible fix to damage that could have occurred on its journey over to the UK, but may have taken place at a later date, it is a 45-year old car after all.
Under the bonnet we find the L28 naturally aspirated 2.8-litre inline-six punching out 140bhp and 147ft/lbs of torque, via a three-speed automatic transmission, both running silky smooth and changing gears without a second thought, this is surely as close to driving a new 280ZX as you can get.
Overall a great opportunity to take home a well-known car which has been owned by two Datsun fanatics who have kept this 280ZX in wonderful condition throughout its life.
