Description
Fully restored in the
late 1980s and lightly used since; rare model, believed to be one of only 16
surviving; featured in The Automobile magazine in the late
80s
The Swift company of
Coventry made their first car in 1900 and continued with light cars and
cyclecars up until the First War as well as some larger models. The 10hp
P-Series came out in 1926 and was gradually improved, gaining a 4- speed
gearbox and 4-wheel brakes. The P5 was the last of these cars before the company
went bust in 1931 and it is believed that only around 16 still survive today.
First registered in August 1931, LXS 638 appears to be the second to
last P5 made. It was found in the late 1980s in
sad but sound condition and was fully restored by a previous owner to a high
standard, as documented in many bills and photographs on file. It was
subsequently featured in an article in The Automobile
magazine which is well worth reading. The car appears to be genuinely low
mileage and seems to have done few miles in the hands of its then-owner and
restorer.
The car changed hands in c.2018 and due to the Covid pandemic
was not used and sat in a garage for about 5 years when the owner sadly
passed away. The current owner bought
the car from the widow in August 2023 to join his collection and has
used it only lightly.
We are told that it drives well with an
easy to use gearbox and nice steering. It cruises nicely at 35 to 40mph with
more in hand. Everything appears to work and the car has no modifications that
we are aware of and has the benefit of a good hood and the luxury of wind up
windows no less!
This car comes with a
handful of photos showing part of the restoration that was carried out in the in
the '80s and a copy of The Automobile magazine (as mentioned above)
where the car was featured.
