1930 Chevrolet Pick-up
Wonderfully, and sensitively restored pick-up with 3.2 straight-six; rare and usable truck with lovely patina
Dating from 1930, this incredibly intact and attractive Chevrolet 1 1/2 tonne pick-up boasts its original corn buck body and, as we understand, spent its life on a farm in Kansas. The last owner bought and imported it to the UK in 2014 from a collector in Belgium who had imported it from the US.
Upon purchase and import to the UK, the truck was stripped and sympathetically rebuilt (but not restored) utilising as much of the original panel work as possible but re-assembled on a new chassis.
The body panels are understood to be original, and have never been repainted hence the beautiful time-worn patina. A few choice upgrades were installed to make modern use that bit easier, including fitment of disc brakes all round (in favour of the original rod operated set up), an electric cooling fan with discreet manual toggle switch under the dash and a 12v electrical system with an alternator conversion.
The dash looks to be as it was with working gauges, although the fuel gauge is apparently intermittent and we find wind-up keep fit windows to help ventilate. To start the truck, you turn the ignition on, and press the button on the floor and she fires straight up with a little choke, running well as we moved it around for these photos. The engine is the usual 3.2-litre 'cast iron wonder' straight-six with floor mounted manual transmission boasting synchromesh on all but 1st gear and conventional pedal positions.
The interior bench seat and door panels have been recently refinished in a period correct antique brown leather and it even includes a straw hat for the authentic feel. This corn buck body, believed to have been assembled and fitted by a Kansas coach builder, still sports the original attractive period ironmongery. In the back of the truck are the twin rear doors and extra panels (greedy sides) should you want to extend the height another 'tier' to give greater load carrying capacity.
The history file includes the V5C showing just one UK owner since registration in 2015, DVLA registration docs, invoice for £1,888 in November 2015 for new tyres and a 18x7 Bare Smoothie (!?), new thermostat and fuel gauge in October 2015 and a few other sundry invoices. Buyers please note, the registration mark BF7547 is non-transferable.
An incredible machine that’s as good to look at atop as it is underneath, with genuine usability and huge nostalgic appeal. We all immediately loved this truck and are looking for reasons to own it!
