1966 MG Midget MkII

Stalled restoration; driven to the sale; recent clutch

The origins of the baby MG, the Midget, date back to the early '30s with the launch of the immortal J2. As time went by, it grew in stature and by the early 1960s production of the mid-size MGB was getting into full swing. The success of the Frogeye from Austin-Healey prompted MG to introduce a smaller sibling to the newly launched MGB, which they named the Midget - they were riding high, although in fairness, its probably a name manufacturers would thing twice about using today!

Largely based on the Austin-Healey Sprite, the MG shared virtually every component, a bonus today as parts are readily available at very reasonable prices.

This March 1966 Midget MkII would have originally come with a 1,098cc A-series engine, although the V5C says it has been uprated to a 1,275cc unit at some point and has been with its current owner for the last nine years. It represents a stalled restoration, the vendor moving to more exotic machinery part way through, the car having been in storage for the last few years. We are happy to report that it was driven to us and is described by the vendor as solid with good wings and arches.

Painted in BRG, it carries plenty of patina and has recently been fitted with a new clutch. The gears work nicely and we are told it has good oil pressure and is peppy and responsive, aided by a tuned exhaust manifold.

It comes with a tonneau, hood frame and hood cover (rather tired) and would clearly benefit from a good tidying over time. If you are looking for a use and improve project, this ticks the boxes and would provide lots of entertainment during the journey.
