Three owners from new, the second for 25 years; recent £22,000 restoration by Parrs; 148bhp 2.5 engine; very smart indeed

When Porsche launched the 924 in November 1975, it marked a radical departure for the company: not only did it have a front engine, it was also cooled by water rather than air.
Initially Porsche fans were not entirely convinced but, once behind the wheel, few could find anything to complain about. With its front engine, rear transaxle layout, the 924 was a fabulously well-balanced machine that actually out-handled the wayward 911.
Initially power came from a 2.0 123bhp four-cylinder engine but from 1986 this was replaced by a larger 2.5 engine from the Porsche 944 which produced 148bhp. Usually supplied with a five-speed manual gearbox, a fully automatic version was also offered – the first Porsche ever to have this option.
At two-thirds the price of a 911, the 924 was a huge success for Porsche and remained in production until 1988, effectively saving the company at a difficult time in its history (and also inspiring the suspiciously similar Mazda RX7).
Supplied new by AFN of Guildford in January 1986, this lovely 924S Automatic has had just three owners to date, the first lady owner keeping it for six years and the second Doctor owner keeping it for 25 years (1993 – 2018). Options include Teledial alloy wheels; electric door mirrors; remote central locking; power steering; electric sunroof; electric windows and rear window wiper.
It has covered 150,500 miles with a good service history comprising nine stamps in the book up to 149,672 miles in March 2018 plus invoices for another three services which makes 12 in total, the last service being carried out less than 500 miles ago. However, the service record only tells part of the story because what makes this 924 special are the other invoices that come with it.
In December 2006 the car was subject to a Cat D insurance loss (not difficult as 924s were worth very little at the time) but the Doctor had the damage repaired and carried on using it. In 2015 he demonstrated just how attached he was to the car by sending it to Porsche specialists Parr of Crawley for a money-no-object restoration. Over the next two years it was treated to an extensive rebuild which cost over £22,000. This included an overhaul of all mechanical aspects with many new parts, a rebuilt gearbox, partial interior retrim and a full bodywork restoration, all detailed in copious invoices on file.
As you would expect the car now looks very smart indeed although there is a dent on the right corner of the front valance (see last photo on website) and there are some minor silicone pimples in the paint on the bonnet which are not possible to show in photos. It comes with all its original hand books and an MOT until March 2021 with no advisories recorded. Being offered here at a fraction of the costs lavished on it to date, this freshly rejuvenated 924S will make a great entry-level Porsche for the lucky new owner.
