1990 Mercedes-Benz 300E 4Matic (W124)
One
owner from new showing just 56,517 miles; rare to see all-wheel drive
variant of the venerable W124 series E-Class
Supplied new by Greenoaks Ltd Mercedes Benz of Croydon in November
1990 to our vendor, this One owner W124 series of saloon comes to us in rare to
see 300E 4Matic guise and is finished in Blue/Black with grey lower sections and
wears its original 15” 15-hole flat face (Gullideckel) alloy
wheels.
Under the bonnet, we find the popular
3.0 litre 12-valve M103.980 straight-six petrol engine which developed when new,
188bhp as a non-catalyst car (177bhp with cat) driving all-four wheels (4Matic)
via four-speed automatic transmission with Economy and Sports
mode.
As a 4Matic drive was sent to all four
wheels via a sophisticated electrco/hydraulic system that detected slip and sent
drive to either or both axles via three levels of 4wd.  The light is illuminated presently, and
the vendor tells us its been like this for some time, with 4WD being disabled in
the engine bay (referenced in an invoice dated 06/2004, although the vendor
tells us this can be manually turned on in the engine bay by the 4Matic
lever).
Inside, we find comfortable beige cloth
seats, Walnut trim, four electric windows, electric sunroof, head lamp
wash/wipe, electric passenger mirror, electric driver’s seat, heated rear
screen, drop down rear head rests.
The car has
covered just 56,517 miles covered by our sole owner, the car presenting well for
it age, with some marks present and would likely benefit from a thorough valet
given its not seen much recent use and likely a new set of boots (the tyres show
signs of age/perishing as pictured) but otherwise feels comfortable and
appealing.
The history file includes the V5C
confirming sole ownership, the owner’s pack and service book revealing 15
stamps, the last in October 2019 at 56,490 – just 27 miles ago and only 34 miles
covered in the last four years since the previous service in October
2018.
In addition, the file includes an
original sales brochure, original purchase sales order form dated October 1990
for £25,420 and organised dossier of older invoices, more recent invoices and a
couple of Mots including the most recent, valid until November 2023 recording
nine advisories (enter the reg at check-mot.history.gov.uk) although they seem
to relate primarily to old tyres, a corroded coil spring, loose mirror
(replacement in the rear footwell) and a minor oil leak.
Recent works in file of note include fitment of a new fuel pressure
regulator in July 2022 at a cost of some £606, new fuel pump, relays and ABS
module in October 2021 costing £454, new battery in November
2021.
Ready to be enjoyed as a ‘normal’ rear
wheel drive 300E or with some investigation and work an all-wheel drive 300E
4Matic once again – either way, its highly uncommon to find a sole ownership
W124 with only 56,000 miles on the clock these days which is rather
super.
