Launched in
1908, the Ford Model T is not only credited as the most influential car of the
20th Century, it is also widely acknowledged to be one of the most successful
products of all time. The world’s first affordable automobile, not only did it
democratize the luxury of personal transport, it also revolutionised the means
of production and transformed the social and commercial life of America, thus
setting the template for the rise of the greatest superpower the world has ever
seen.
By 1914, the assembly process for the
Model T had been so streamlined that it took only 93 minutes to assemble each
car, Ford producing more cars in one year than all other car makers combined.
Costing just $850 at launch when competing cars cost well over $2,000, the price
dropped steadily as sales rose, falling to $300 by 1920. By the time Henry had
sold his 10 millionth Model T, nine out of ten of all cars in the world were
Fords.
Largely designed by Childe Harold Wills,
with input from Hungarian immigrants Joseph Galamb and Eugene Farkas, it was
powered by a 2.9-litre monobloc 4-cylinder engine producing 20hp that could run
on petrol, kerosene or ethanol and was capable of 45mph with 25mpg
economy. Over 15 million Model Ts were sold before it was finally
replaced by the Model A in 1927, more than any other car for almost a
century.
Dating from 1922, this four-seat
tourer was imported to the UK from America in 2014 and has had just two owners
since, our vendor acquiring it in 2015 to join a collection of vintage cars. We
are told that the T has been kept well-maintained and used on various runs
and rallies around the Home Counties, often with the whole family on board. She
has also been used to introduce others to the joys of Model T
driving.
A serving officer in the RAF, our
vendor has also used the car to promote heritage days at RAF Halton where she
would regularly be parked at the front of Halton House and provide transport
between the heritage facilities on site. She has also been used in film work for
a couple of period dramas filmed in and around RAF Halton. In 2020 she completed
a week-long tour around the First World War battlefields of
Northern France.
Supplied with various
invoices for routine upkeep, she also comes with a new canvas hood tailor-made
for a 1922 Model T, complete with wooden hood staves, plus a detailed guide on
how to install the hood correctly. Four spare tyres are also included, along
with a 41-page ‘Model T Ford Service Course’ which explains in great detail how
to operate and maintain the car correctly.
The
Model T is one of the most significant cars in motoring history and no serious
collection is complete without one. This well-sorted and well-preserved example
looks mighty tempting at the sensible guide price suggested.
