The original bill of sale for this lovely Magnette
forms part of a very substantial history file. It was sold to Dr Stokes of
Sherborne in Dorset in April 1957 by his local Nuffield Dealer who dealt in
Morris, MG, Wolseley and Riley motorcars. Sticklands Garages charged
£1,062.7shillings, although this was reduced by £200 for his trade-in
Vauxhall 14.
The original Buff Logbook lists just one owner, Dr Stokes,
the car changing hands in 1991 for the first time having spent most of its life
tucked away in the good Doctor's garage. At this point, it passed to a
relative in Hampshire.
Its third owner bought the car in 1995 from her,
embarking on a ground-up restoration, although the bodywork remained
in remarkably sound order. The work was entrusted to Roger Taylor Classic
Cars who stripped the car ready for a bare metal respray in its original
black livery. They decided to replace the sills because they had a pair of NOS
on the shelf, but that was all the metal work carried out.
The
engine and gearbox were stripped and attended to as necessary, although with
just 44,000 miles on the clock there wasn't much wear. The head
was modified with valve seat inserts so that it could run on
unleaded petrol.
The process took a couple of years and there are
plenty of bills on file to show the work done. The interior was refitted and is
both gorgeous and original - including the wood trim and the paintwork
still gleams after 25 years - testament to the quality of the work done in the
first instance.
Our vendor acquired the car about four years ago and has
used it gently, given the brakes an overhaul but that is all that it has
required.
The file also includes a Heritage Certificate, original
handbook, garage lubrication chart and a selection of original
brochures.
Driven some 35 miles to the sale, this must be one of, if not
the best available. It is well worth close inspection and only on
offer because our vendor has decided to consolidate his collection
into one car.
