Description

Fabulous matching numbers example with lots of sensible upgrades; four speed plus reverse; starter; foot throttle; OHV Matchless rebuilt by Cameron Engineering; bills for £40,000 on file

This well-sorted and original MX4 Super Sports moved from Southsea to London in 1950, before a journey north to Cockermouth not long after, remaining in that part of the world for the next 20 years or so according to the buff logbook on file.

Retaining its original WN 7460 registration number, this 1934 Super Sports comes with a 'barrel back' and retains the same MX4 engine that was fitted new in Malvern 90 years ago.

The vendor acquired it in 2014 through an ad in the Morgan 3-wheeler club magazine, having just come from extensive restoration works by its former keeper - bills on file totalling some £40,000.

In 2008 South Western Coachworks billed for a rewire and brake overhaul, including new bearings, shoes, hoses and springs etc. Cameron Engineering in Malvern undertook a major engine overhaul including a new flywheel and conrod assembly, pistons and top end overhaul. The barrels were relinered and bored and electronic ignition was fitted.

It also had a Simmank four-speed conversion with reverse and a 12-volt alternator along with a conventional foot throttle for ease of control. They also fitted an electric starter, making it even more practical. Most of this work had been done by 2010.

Fairbourne Carriages in Kent carried on with a series of improvements in 2011, completing the restoration of what was already a nice example.

The vendor advises us that most of the bodywork is original and that both the engine and gearbox are original to the car - unusual in a Morgan of this era.

The interior is in red leather and the brakes have been converted to hydraulic. Front shock absorbers have been fitted and there are some useful spares under the front seat plus a lubrication chart and a copy of the owner's handbook. It also sports a smart 'Deer' mascot and town cap....

Always kept in a warm, dry garage, it is only for sale due to the owner finding it harder to hop in and out and general lack of use.

The Matchless engine was known for its smooth power delivery. This car, with its four speeds, electric start and alternator, foot throttle and hydraulic brakes, has all the mods needed for rapid progress without spoiling what is a most original example.
