Description
From long-term ownership; well-maintained with many new parts; recent
new tyres and hydraulics; PTO; split exhaust; good running order; a super
example of this agricultural icon
Affectionately
known as the ‘Little Grey Fergie’, it is no exaggeration to say that Harry
Ferguson’s lightweight TE20 transformed farming when it came out in 1946.
Small and manoeuvrable, the Fergie’s trump card
was the revolutionary ‘Ferguson System’ – an ingenious variable hydraulic
control for plough depth which effectively transferred the ‘pull’ of the plough
into ‘downforce’ over the rear wheels, allied to a brilliant three-point hitch.
The latter allowed implements to be directly
mounted onto the tractor, working as one unit, a significant departure from
earlier tractors that merely towed equipment.
The combination of these
two systems allowed the small TE20 to do the job of machines weighing five times
as much. This had profound benefits for small and medium farms, which previously
relied on horses and manual labour, vastly increasing productivity and reducing
arduous toil.
Like all the best machines, it
also looked fantastic and many a city-dweller would happily have one in their
garden merely as an ornament – your scribe included!
Dating from January 1953, this delightful Fergie has been used as its
makers intended – no soft-handed typist, our vendor owns a small-holding in
rural Worcestershire and has been using this TE20 for light duties around the
property for almost 20 years. Not that you would know by looking at it.
Always stored in a cosy barn when not in use, it
has been well-maintained, recent work including rebuilt hydraulics, a new petrol
tank, recent new mudguards and rear tyres, still with the pips showing. Equipped
with an adapter for 1 3/8” PTO, it also has a split exhaust allowing entry to a
low shed or garage.
Gamely on offer at no
reserve, we are told that it drives as well as it looks and it is
road-registered so you could even toddle down to the pub in it. We love it and
we are sure you will too so do come and see it!
