Offered from
a deceased estate, this highly specified pre-war MG is powered by a 939cc
PB-specification engine coupled to a desirable close-ratio PB manual gearbox.
Originally imported from South Africa, it has remained in its most recent
ownership until being formally UK registered in March 2024.
Finished in Claret Red with beautifully trimmed cherry red leather
upholstery, full carpeting and full windscreen, the car presents in excellent
condition throughout. It features an attractive lightweight cycle-wing aluminium
body, combining classic sporting looks with enhanced
performance.
Thought to have been a four seater
PA originally, we belive that its current guise of a two seater PA/PB with alloy
body was put together between 2014 and 2017, It has
been extensively restored and upgraded to a specification that many
enthusiasts aspire to own. While retaining the appearance of a period road car,
it benefits from a host of carefully considered performance enhancements, making
it equally suitable for fast road driving, touring, club sprints, hill climbs,
rallies or historic competition.
The engine has
been built to 60mm bore PB specification and incorporates a counter-balanced
billet crankshaft, Corello-pattern connecting rods, double breather system,
water pump, and a side-mounted Marshall A75 supercharger breathing through the
original bronze HV5 carburettor. Producing an estimated 65–70bhp, performance is
further enhanced by the rare close-ratio PB gearbox.
Additional period-style features include a later PB dashboard with a
full complement of instruments, including factory optional gauges, quick-release
filler caps, bonnet belt, aero screens, and correct lighting and chromework. The
lightweight aluminium body contributes to the car's lively performance while
retaining the practicality of a full windscreen.
The MG competed successfully in a number of South African historic
events, including the South African Grand Prix meeting, before returning to the
UK, where it was comprehensively inspected and prepared for its new life by the
well-regarded Barry Walker MGs.
Since arriving
with us, we have successfully started and run the car under its own power, and a
video demonstrating this has been added to the description.
As we are unsure how long the MG has been off the road, we have
elected not to road-test the vehicle. However, based on our observations, we see
no reason why this would present any issues, although we would recommend a
routine recommissioning before returning the car to regular road
use.
A rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully
restored and exceptionally well-specified late PA, combining period charm with
significantly enhanced performance and drivability. Whether destined for
spirited touring, historic motorsport, or concours events, this outstanding MG
is ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian.
Recent Amendment: After taking a
closer look, we decided to take the car for a short drive to reassure
prospective buyers that it requires only a light recommissioning. The car
started without issue and drove as expected. The brakes would benefit from a
minor adjustment, but otherwise the vehicle performed well. A video is attached
