Description
Very rare pre war French machine; four wheel drive and steering; Frank
Galliers of Shrewsbury livery
Designed by the renowned French
engineering firm Latil, this fascinating 1939 Mark I Road Tractor is believed to
be a UK built machine, a remarkably rare survivor from the pre-war era. Best
known for producing highly capable four-wheel-drive commercial and military
vehicles long before such technology became commonplace, Latil earned a
reputation for engineering innovation, with permanent four-wheel drive and
four-wheel steering making its tractors exceptionally manoeuvrable in demanding
conditions.
Chassis number 657, this example is identified by its
original chassis plate, which accompanies the history file and records it as a
Type: Mark I, Series: AE5. Originally described as a Traulier, these machines
were specifically designed for hauling timber and other heavy loads through
forestry and difficult terrain, where their advanced drivetrain gave them a
significant advantage over conventional tractors of the period.
Finished
in the familiar Frank Galliers of Shrewsbury livery, it is believed to have
originally carried the colours of Spencers of Brigstock before later being
acquired by the Galliers family for use within their business and subsequently
exhibited at vintage vehicle rallies and shows. The accompanying history file
includes a selection of excellent period photographs together with images from
its show career, adding considerably to its provenance.
Mechanically, the
Latil runs and drives, with its impressive four-wheel steering and
four-wheel-drive system still demonstrating the remarkable capability that made
these machines famous. The rear-mounted winch is also reported to be in working
order, further enhancing its appeal and practicality for
demonstrations.
The current vendor has owned the tractor for the past
couple of years, although machines such as this rarely stay in one place for too
long. Their rarity and sheer engineering curiosity mean they are often sought
out by collectors looking for something genuinely different to complement an
established collection of commercial, agricultural or military
vehicles.
Wonderfully characterful, exceptionally uncommon and
accompanied by a fascinating history file, this pre-war Latil represents a rare
