1974 BMW 2002Tii
Nicely preserved Tii; believed only 69,000 miles with documented speedo change; well-maintained; many new parts including Eibach suspension and electronic ignition; one of only around 115 still on UK roads
In 1968, following on from the success of the 1502/1602 range, BMW added a new model, the 2002. The 2002 looked visually similar to the smaller engined models, although it gained extra brightwork and ornamentation. The new car came with a choice of either a two-door saloon or three-door ‘Touring’ hatch body. In addition a limited number of convertible 2002s were also built.
Powered by a 1,990cc overhead cam engine, the 2002 offered excellent handling and performance for its day and came with a choice of 4-speed, 5-speed or automatic transmission. In 1972 a more powerful Tii joined the range with a 130bhp fuel-injected engine which could launch it to 60mph in 8.3 seconds on its way to a top speed of 120mph. It remained in production until 1975.
First registered in May 1974, this Verona Red BMW 2002 Tii is described by the vendor as follows:
"This is a genuine Tii and one of only 115 left on UK roads. I purchased the car from the previous owner in 2017. He had had it in his workshop for around 10 years and had done some mechanical work as follows, although he did not keep the receipts: calipers refurbished; braided flexi brake hoses; handbrake cable; rear wheel cylinders; clutch slave and master cylinders; water pump; cold start injector; Magnecor ignition leads; underside cleaned and painted.
"I have upgraded it over the last four years whilst using it whenever I could on fine days only, on a rolling restoration basis. The car has been MOT’d every year in my ownership, the current MOT running until 29th December with no advisories, although as a Historic Vehicle it is now exempt from road tax and MOT. The car runs well and when revved will respond nicely considering it’s a 47-year-old car.
"In my ownership I have had work done by renowned BMW 02 specialists JFI Classics as follows: Recommissioning on purchase and prep for initial MOT; adjusting injection system; adjusting valve clearances; fitting new plugs; fitting electronic ignition; setting timing etc; engine oil flush and refill; gearbox flush and refill; differential flush and refill; cooling system flush and refill; install cold start injector circuit; free up o/s/f brake caliper; rectify indicator fault; replace wipers; replace all suspension bushes throughout with polybush items; replace suspension with Eibach 15mm lowered springs all round; replace shock absorbers front and rear; replace both front upper shock mounts; replace o/s/r half shaft (good used) and new wheel bearing.
"I have also carried out the following work: replaced front and rear exhaust sections with genuine BMW items and rubbers; stainless front exhaust downpipe; refurbish prop shaft with new carrier bearing, new flexi coupling (Guibo) and balance; delete brake servo (old unit present but needs refurbishing); fit front camber plates (JFI design); replaced thermostat and coolant flush; new earth strap; new coil; petrol tank refurbished; petrol tank filler hose; driver window mechanism replaced (good used); new indicator relay; spot lamps wiring and relay; distributor cap; fuel pump (Bosch); fuel filter; horn contact; new horns; n/s/f seat belt; rear seat belts x2; replace instrument binnacle due to failed speedo @ 64,186 with good used showing 6,501 miles (old unit included); rear subframe bushes; outer track rod ends; lower ball joints; centre steering rod; diff casing gasket and refill diff; rear brake shoes; front bumper trim; new Hankook tyres March 2019 (rear) and June 2020 (front); interior driver’s door handle; overmats; clear wax oil applied to cavities and underside.
"If keeping the car I would have a full paint job. Whilst the car is very presentable and shines up well, it has chips and marks here and there and has had paintwork over the years and would benefit from a professional finish. [We think he is being a bit finicky there as it looks more than presentable!].
"The interior is again quite presentable and surprisingly comfortable however the dash has the usual BMW cracks and there is general age-related wear to various trim parts as expected of a car of this age. The door locks are not working but I have never bothered replacing. The car is only offered at auction to go toward funding my next project of a Porsche 911."
