Impressive condition; running well and sounding sweet; just
41,790 miles indicated
Launched in 1955, the Ford
Squire was a two-door estate version of the compact Thames 300E panel van which
was in turn based on the Anglia/Prefect 100E four-door saloon. The Squire’s
tailgate was in two pieces split horizontally and the rear seat could be folded
flat to convert it from a four-seater to a useful load carrier. It was powered
by Ford’s trusty 36bhp 1,172cc sidevalve engine which gave it a top speed of
70mph.
An almost identical Ford Escort version
was also available which had the lower trim level of the Anglia. This was
slightly cheaper than the Squire and proved more popular, remaining in
production until 1961 (two years longer than the Squire) by which time 33,131
Escorts had been sold.
First registered in St
Helens in May 1961, this Escort estate must be one of the last made. We are told
that for many years it was on static display in a museum, hence the good state
of preservation today. Our vendor has recently treated the car to a degree of
recommissioning including fitting electronic ignition, sealed
beam headlights, greasing the hubs, replacing the brake lines and front
brake shoes etc.
It is showing just 41,791
miles which can’t be warranted but is certainly plausible given the overall
condition of the car. The interior is very smart, bar some staining to the
headlining, and the exterior looks equally impressive having been repainted in
the original colour to a high standard at some point in the
past.
Starting promptly and running very sweetly as we have
moved it around on site, it comes with its original buff logbook, a handful of
recent invoices plus some useful spares in the boot.
Overall, a rare opportunity to take home what must surely be one of
the cleanest Ford Escorts remaining.
