Description
Rare two-wheel drive 86" variant, one of perhaps
200 made for military use where 4wd was not required; recent new
canvas hood and seat set from Exmoor Trim
Dating
from August 1954, this Land Rover Series 1 is a rather rare variant, being a
two-wheel drive 86” model built, we understand, for the military, for use on air
bases or aircraft carriers where four-wheel drive was not required and
weight-saving was a higher priority.
Various sources online suggest that only
c.200 of these two-wheel drive versions of the Series 1 were built, making it a
rather rare specimen.
Finished in green with
two-seat cab and open back (canvas top loose in the rear) the truck looks rugged
with its hand-painted finish and has been with our retired steam engine expert
vendor for the past couple of years.
Under the
bonnet, we find the typical 1.6 litre four-cylinder ‘spread-bore’ petrol engine
driving the rear wheels only via four-speed manual
transmission.
The history file includes the V5C
showing two former keepers since registration in November 2000, a letter from
Land Rover dated October 2000 confirming when the vehicle was built and sundry
bills for a full seat set from Exmoor Trim in November 2022 costing £437, a
Smiths round-heater for £203, Khaki canvas top in May 2023 costing £451 along
with ignition system parts and new vacuum advance unit in January
2023.
An interesting example of a rare variant
that will no doubt turn heads at any Land Rover meet.
