Rare factory
right-hand drive; super condition throughout; just one UK owner; from a
wonderful private collection
Ford launched its first V8 models in
1932 but the range got a major update in 1935 with the arrival of the Model 48.
Only in production for a couple of years before it was replaced by the Model 60,
it had many improvements over the earlier models including a stronger chassis,
more streamlined Art Deco styling and front-hinged doors. It was powered by an
85bhp light metal alloy 221ci (3.6-litres) flathead V8 driving the rear wheels
via three-speed sliding mesh manual transmission.
The Model 48 came in a
bewildering number of body styles (saloon; coupe; roadster; phaeton; station
wagon; pickup etc) and has always been highly prized by the hot-rodding
community.
Built in 1935, this rare factory right-hand drive Model 48
has a roadster-style open body with rumble seats concealed in the tail to make
it a four-seater when required. Most likely made in the Ford plant in Canada, it
is believed to have been exported to South Africa in 1939.
Our vendor
purchased the car while living in South Africa a few years back and imported it
to the UK in 2015. It has formed part of his wonderful collection ever since,
being very little used but regularly started and maintained.
Other than
the V5C (showing no former keepers) and its import/export documents, there is
sadly no other documentation with the car.
As you can see in the photos,
it is in lovely order throughout and has clearly been treated to a substantial
restoration at some point in the not-too-distant past. The bodywork looks
wonderfully straight, the green paintwork is some of the best we have seen, and
the flathead V8 is running smooth. As this Ford is probably older than you, it
does have the odd age-related mark, but these are minimal and few and far
between (as pictured).
Running and driving nicely on site, this Ford 48
is one of the most eye-catching Vintage machines we have had the pleasure of
offering in one of our auctions and must be seen to be fully
appreciated.
