First registered
in March 1960, this super home market factory RHD TR3A has been in the current
ownership since 1999 and has been constantly improved and upgraded over the
years to make it a fast and reliable companion for long-distance touring.
On offer here from a deceased estate, it comes
with three folders of history (invoices; dyno sheets; Heritage Certicate;
handbooks; technical literature etc) plus some useful notes from the
late-owner explaining how he came to buy the car, what he has done to it during
his long ownership and best of all, just how much fun it has brought to him and
his family during the many adventures they have had with the car.
Having owned and rallied TR2s and TR3s in the
1960s, the owner had a great fondness for the model and knew their strengths and
weaknesses inside-out. The list of mods to this car is extensive and they have
all been carefully thought-out to maximise driveability over outright
performance. Highlights include:

On a
rally in 2022 an oil hose came undone and damaged the engine so in July 2023 it
was stripped and rebuilt with new piston rings, main and big end bearings,
crankshaft thrust washers, cam followers etc. It has barely been driven since so
it will need a careful running-in period and an oil change within the next 100
miles or so. The engine was torqued up correctly when it was assembled but the
head will need re-torquing at the same time.
The wiring was also disturbed when the engine and gearbox were
removed and reinstated and the owner fell ill before he could finish the job. We
are advised that the brake lights need reconnecting, as does the horn, the
reversing light, the hazard lights, the overdrive switch and the Kenlowe fan
override switch (it works fine on the thermostat). The owner’s son also noticed
that the hose feeding fuel to the rear carburettor is beginning to perish so
this should be changed pretty soon.
As you can
see in the photos, this is a great-looking car with many choice upgrades.
Although MOT-exempt, it has been tested annually during the current 26-year
ownership during which time it has covered some 25,000 miles, including regular
trips to Le Mans. It was last tested in June 2022 when it passed with just one
minor advisory for a worn rear tyre (both rear tyres have since been renewed)
and it has only covered 800 miles since, the odometer currently showing 32,065
miles.
Starting promptly and driving very nicely
indeed as we have moved it around on site, with healthy 60psi oil pressure, this
much-loved TR3A is on offer at no reserve and now needs an enthusiastic new
owner who can reap the rewards of all the good work carried out by a
knowledgeable long-term owner.
