Description
Half-scale 3D fibreglass display model used by Jaguar
Racing to announce their entry into Formula 1 in 2000 and to promote the
car driven by Eddie Irvine; believed one of only two made; 94" long x 23"
high; current owner 20+ years; fabulous man cave ornament
Jaguar entered
Formula 1 in 2000 after buying the existing Stewart-Ford F1 Grand Prix team from
Ford in June 1999. Initially managed by Sir Jackie Stewart OBE and his son Paul,
the new Jaguar Racing team was based at a high-tech facility in Milton Keynes.
The very first single-seater racing car ever
built by Jaguar, the R1-07 was developed from the existing Stewart-Ford and was
unveiled at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in January 2000. The engine was a
naturally aspirated Cosworth V10 3.0-litre supplied by Ford and producing 805bhp
at a heady 17,500rpm. Major sponsors included HSBC bank, Beck’s beer, Lear
Corporation and American telecommunications giant AT&T - hence the logos on
the striking green and white bodywork.
The team
drivers were Irishman Eddie Irvine who had finished second in the 1999 drivers’
championship while driving for Ferrari, and Englishman Johnny Herbert, winner of
the 1999 European GP at the Nurburgring in the Stewart-Ford.
Jaguar stayed in F1 for five seasons (2000 –
2004) before Ford (who owned Jaguar at the time) sold the team to Red Bull
Racing. The original Eddie Irvine Jaguar R1-07 F1 car is now owned by the Jaguar
Daimler Heritage Trust and is usually on display at the British Motor Museum in
Gaydon or at the Coventry Transport Museum.
This
3D half-scale model is one of two made to promote the launch of the new Jaguar
Racing team and the signing of the drivers – one with Eddie Irvine’s name on it,
the other with Johnnie Herbert’s name. Both of the models were subsequently sold
in a charity auction at a gala evening hosted by Jaguar Racing.
Our vendor acquired this Eddie Jordan model
shortly afterwards and it has been on display in his modern car dealership for
the last 20+ years. Now retired, he has no further use for the model, hence its
appearance in this sale.
As you
can see in the photos, it is in excellent condition with no damage in evidence
and weighs only a few kilos so could be easily hung from a wall
without any special fixings (see last photo for reverse of board). It measures
94" long by 23" high.
Coming from an interesting episode of F1
history and with good provenance, this unique display board is sure to be of
interest to any Jaguar fan or F1 collector. It would also prove a real talking
point in any car dealership, bar or menswear shop or make a great ornament for
your man cave!
