A reliable workhorse in regular use; one owner from 1999 - 2022; lots
of history; long MOT; bodywork is looking tired but there's still loads of life
left in this famously durable classic estate
Okay, this old
Merc doesn’t fill you with confidence when you first take a look at it, but
spend just a couple of minutes behind the wheel and you might be pleasantly
surprised.
We certainly were because it actually drives way better than
it looks with that fabulous W124 magic carpet ride, dismissing the pot holes at
the bottom of our yard like they weren’t even there and with that ‘hewn from
granite’ feeling unique to the W124.
It was
first registered in September 1993 and has had just five owners since, the
second keeping it for 22 years (1999 – 2022). While the service book has gone
astray, it comes with dozens of invoices for regular upkeep between 2000 and
2023. It was last serviced in October 2023 and it has only covered 200 miles
since.
It has covered just over 122,000 miles
which is nothing for a W124, with over 20 MOTs from 2000 onwards to warrant the
mileage. The current MOT is valid until 19th November with just a few
advisories which you can look up online.
Apart
from their propensity to rust if neglected, these W124 Mercs are beautifully
built and can clock up vast mileages with ease: they really are designed to last
a lifetime and owners tend to hang on to them for years, as the second owner did
with this one. Being a 1993 model, it benefits from all the
detail improvements that were made to the model over the years, with a vast
load area in the back.
Sort out the
crusty front wings and this faithful workhorse should still have at
least another three decades of useful life ahead of it. On offer here at no
reserve, the best bid drives it home.
