Just two owners from new, the current for 20 years; only 81k miles
with 11 service stamps; 5-speed manual; removable sun roof; exceptionally
clean, tidy and well-preserved; a fine example of this beautifully-built
Eighties icon
A vitally
important model for Porsche at a time when 911 sales were flagging, the 944 was
launched in 1982 and proved an immediate success, press and public alike being
bowled over by the brilliant handling, torquey engines and ‘hewn from solid’
build quality.
Initially it came with just one
engine option, a 163bhp 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit that was essentially half
of the V8 from the 928. Over the next few years four more engine options were
offered, a 189bhp 2.7-litre 16v, a 220bhp Turbo, a 250bhp Turbo S and a
naturally aspirated 211bhp 3-litre.
This last
engine is considered by many to be the best of the bunch, offering the
reliability and fuel economy of the smaller-engined model but nearly as fast as
the Turbo (0-60 in 5.9 secs and 150mph) with bags of low-down torque. As you
would expect of a Porsche, the S2 was a proper driver's car with fabulous
performance, balance and handling – superior to a 911 in many
respects.
Supplied new by Merlin Cambria of
Cardiff in August 1990, this S2 has had just two owners from new, the current
since 2005. It has covered only 81,200 miles with a good service history
comprising 11 stamps in the book, the last at 62,449 miles in May 2005 when the
timing belts were also replaced (see photos). The first four services were by
Merlin Cambria and the last seven by Welsh Porsche Specialists near Bridgend.
There are also dozens of invoices for additional maintenance and new parts
fitted.
Lightly used in fine weather only during
the current 20-year ownership, this S2 has always been kept garaged and is in
really super and well-preserved condition throughout with shiny Carrera White
paintwork and a smart blue interior with leather front seats. Fitted with a
5-speed manual gearbox, it also has headlamp washers, electric windows and a
large electric sun roof which is easily removed and fits in the boot for
open-air driving.
It has an MOT until June 2026
with just one minor advisory (‘n/s/f arb bush worn’) and has been starting
promptly and running very nicely as we have moved it around on site. Still on
its original Merlin Cambria number plates, it retains all its handbooks, toolkit
and wheel changing kit and has two sets of keys.
These 944s are so everyday usable thar it is hard to find one with
under 100k on the clock. This highly original two-owner beauty looks exceptional
value at the modest guide price suggested.
