Lot Ended
Description
From a deceased estate; only 57k miles; recent full brake system
overhaul; super condition; driven 40 miles to the sale; running beautifully
on site; lots to like about this one
As copies of the
factory build sheets show, this Shadow I was originally ordered by a Mr AJ
Griffiths of Barton-on-Sea via Mann Egerton of Derby in April 1972. He requested
Sand over Astrakhan paintwork, Beige hide, Fawn Ambla headlining and Cumberland
Stone carpets. Special features included green Sundym glass, automatic speed
control, Marchal quartz iodine headlamps and whitewall tyres.
Mr Griffiths took delivery in August 1972, the
purchase invoice showing that it cost £8,734. To put that into perspective, the
average house price at the time was £6,000 and the average annual salary was
£2,000.
It seems that Mr G kept the car for 12
years, the second owner keeping it for 23 years (1984 – 2007), during which time
it had the number 79 DRP. It then had 5 more owners (one in Downpatrick,
Ireland), the last being a Mr Clough of Liverpool who owned it from 2011 – 2018
and seems to have used it for his wedding hire business, Silver Lady
Wedding Cars.
Sadly there are no handbooks with
the car but there are a fair few invoices, the earliest being for a full service
in December 1980 at 37,910 miles. There are lots of bills from 2011 – 2015 to
show regular upkeep while it was being used as wedding car (tyres, shocks, brake
discs, service items etc), reliability obviously being a vital requirement for
this role. Imagine breaking down on the way to your own
wedding…
The current owner acquired the car in
July 2018 when it had 56,451 miles on the clock. Well-known to Brightwells, he
was a stickler for detail and went right through the car to get it up to the
standard he required, as detailed in 20 invoices on file.
This included a complete brake system overhaul with reconditioned
accumulators and calipers plus new pads etc, along with a host of other minor
items. As he had a couple of other Bentleys and Rolls-Royces to play with, he
used the Shadow only very lightly thereafter, covering just 500 miles in it
before he sadly passed away in 2022.
Kept in
heated storage for the last three years, ownership transferred first to his
widow, then to his daughter, so although the V5C records nine former keepers it
is effectively only seven.
As you can see in the
photos, this pampered Shadow is in super condition both inside and out, the only
real blemishes we noted being some lacquer peel on the door cappings (as
pictured).
Driven 40 miles to the sale, it has
been starting instantly and running beautifully as we have moved it around on
site.
