320BHP; great looking car
By the mid-1970s, sales of the
911 were slowing and with their engineers at the time believing it to have
reached the pinnacle of its development, Porsche executives believed that a more
comfortable GT model would have wider appeal, and provide them with a direct
competitor to BMW and Mercedes in the all-important American
market.
Porsche launched their 928 in
1977, featuring a galvanised steel chassis and many body panels from aluminium
to save weight. Meanwhile, the distinctive pop-up headlamp units remained
visible when retracted, similar to those on the Lamborghini
Miura.
The integrated and
colour-coded bumpers made from polyurethane were advanced for the time, whilst
also reducing the car's drag coefficient. A substantial luggage area could be
accessed via a rear hatchback, whilst the rear seats could be folded down for
added practicality.
Although the 928 failed to
achieve the sales targets Porsche originally envisioned, and was dismissed by
the 911 purists, it still gained a dedicated following during an 18-year
production run. The 928 was awarded the European Car of the Year accolade in
1978, beating the BMW 7 Series and Ford Granada amongst
others.
Presented in Diamond Blue,
this1988 example benefits from the mid-life redesign the year before; featuring
a front spoiler integrated into the nose, a separate colour-coded rear spoiler,
the addition of side skirts and smoother rear tail-light clusters compared to
the inset design of the original.
With a large history file
dating back to 1998, there is a large file of invoices documenting previous
maintenance, including significant expenditure in 2019 to include a new cambelt
and water pump. It also has a current no advisory MOT until August
2026.
The car is fitted with the
optional 17in alloy wheels, as fitted to the later 928GTS which are all
in perfectly reasonable condition. It has covered almost 175,000 miles
and has had its fair share of owners in the past, but surely that just means it
has been a lot of fun!
