Rare Limited Edition model with various special features; one of only
150 made for the UK market; 86k miles with 10 service stamps; new MOT with
no advisories; driven 40 miles to the sale; very smart indeed; forced sale at a
very tempting guide price!
Any R129
Mercedes SL is special, but this one is more special than most – it is one of
only 250 made in 1998 to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the famous
W198 300SL Roadster, of which only 150 were RHD models for the UK market.
Unique features included: Designo Vario
Green/Blue metallic paintwork which subtly changes colour depending on the
light; Orion Grey ‘Exquisite’ Nappa leather upholstery, finer and softer than
the standard leather trim; Royal Maple wood trim accents on the centre console,
gear shift, doors and steering wheel; EVO II six-spoke 17" alloy wheels, unique
to this model; Special Edition insignia on the sill kick plates and the centre
console.
It also had some choice options such as
Xenon headlamps with wash/wipe; electric memory seats and steering column;
automatic digital climate control; rear seats; colour-matched removable hard top
and electric dark blue soft top. The list price was £55,939 – a big chunk of
money back then and over £3k more than the standard model.
Supplied new by
Speeds Mercedes of Chesterfield in May 1998, this SL320 has covered 86,260 miles
to date with an excellent service history including 10 stamps in the book, the
last under 450 miles ago in February 2024 (85,820 miles - see photos),
plus various supporting invoices.
There are also a good few
invoices for additional work carried out and new parts fitted, including a £3k
spend at the SL Shop in October 2017 for work to the steering and suspension and
an overhaul of the air conditioning system.
Our vendor, who is
the 9th owner, acquired the car in early 2021 to join his Mercedes
collection and it has been kept in nice dry storage since, being lightly used in
fine weather only. He assures us that the dark blue soft top is in good
condition and works as it should. In fact, the only time he has ever fitted the
hard top was for the 40-mile drive to Brightwells.
He also tells us
that the car drives as well as it looks and it has certainly been starting
instantly and running beautifully as we have moved it around on site.
Supplied with all its original handbooks and an original
40th Anniversary sales brochure, it also has a print-out of the full
spec, an MOT until October 2026 with no advisories and two sets of
keys. Sporting our vendor's private plate, SBJ 235, for the last four
years, it has now reverted back to its original R338 CET
plate.
As you can see in the photos,
this rare and recently serviced Limited Edition R129 looks
exceptionally smart for its year/mileage. It is only reluctantly for sale
because our vendor is about to lose his storage unit and urgently needs to thin
down his collection before winter sets in – hence the ‘come and get me’ guide
price.
We did a bit of Googling and it seems the wheels alone could
be worth almost half the bottom estimate so you can afford to bid
generously!
