From a deceased estate; in the current family ownership since 1929;
veteran of dozens of Pioneer Runs; engine out for rebuild; vast history
file; original number plate; many spares included
This 1914 Douglas 350cc has
been in the current family ownership since 1929, passing from father to son in
1991. It seems to have completed the London-to-Brighton Pioneer Run virtually
every year from 1990 - 2013 and there are also certificates showing that it did
the same run in 1946 and 1947.
In fact we are told that at a
recent Pioneer Run, the late-owner was given some sort of award for the sheer
number of times the bike has competed in the event over so many decades.
About three years ago the owner removed the engine from the bike to
be rebuilt but sadly passed away before this job was completed. There are nine
boxes full of parts, many of which are clearly from the engine and some of which
appear to have been restored, but we are not able to itemise or photograph all
these parts individually so bidders will need to come and inspect them for
themselves to gain a true picture of what is or isn’t
present.
The bike comes with a very
large history file, including 36 old MOTs from 1983 – 2020 plus 38 old tax discs
from 1946 – 2015 to show that it was formerly in regular use. There are also
many notes; invoices; event programmes; press cuttings; technical literature;
Club correspondence etc. This is far too extensive to photograph or summarise
here – once again, personal inspection is strongly
recommended.
On offer here from a estate,
this machine comes from the same stable as the other Douglas, the Auto-Wheel and
the Royal Enfield elsewhere in this catalogue (Lots 201; 207; 208), all being
sold at no reserve.
