Only having one
registered keeper, this beautifully preserved 1978 Volkswagen Type 2 Bay Window
Devon Camper represents a rare opportunity to acquire an exceptionally original
example.
Having covered only 71,128 miles from new, supported by an
impressive 27 service stamps, this camper has clearly benefited from careful
ownership throughout its life.
The vehicle was
sold by ourselves in November 2016 on behalf of a deceased estate to a dedicated
collector, who subsequently retired the van to dry storage for the past ten
years. During this period it was regularly started and maintained, and since
returning to us it has been driven, stopped, and started without issue for
photography and video purposes.
The current owner has now decided that
this charming camper deserves to be enjoyed once again, whether for summer
holidays, weekend escapes, or even regular daily use.
Finished in what is described on the V5C as yellow and
white (Marino Yellow), this LHD example was originally ordered new through
Devon Conversions specifically for European touring. It remains remarkably
original, never having required welding and with an underside that
is impressive for its age. Notably, the van appears to have never had a
body panel replaced, further underlining the quality of its
preservation.
Power comes from the desirable
factory-fitted 1970cc CJ flat-four engine, offering noticeably more torque than
the more common 1600cc units found in most VW campers, making it particularly
well suited to touring. The engine bay benefits from upgraded fuel lines and
heavy-duty batteries, and the vehicle seems to drive well.
The Devon Caravanette conversion is complete and retains its original
interior features, including the pop-top roof, louvre window, rock and roll bed,
cooker, sink, fridge, buddy seat, and generous storage throughout. The original
cupboard units, flooring, table, and table leg are all present and in very good
condition, complemented by front seats with headrests.
Registered as a motor caravan, with a date of first registration of
17th October 1978, this camper is accompanied by a substantial history file
documenting European trips, routine maintenance, and ownership records, along
with the original handbooks and keys.
A
wonderfully honest and increasingly hard-to-find Bay Window camper, combining
