Built on 1st October 1959, this MGA
Twin-Cam is a particularly notable
example, having been supplied new by University Motors of Piccadilly and used
shortly afterwards as the Earls Court Motor Show car, a fact confirmed by the
British Leyland Heritage Certificate on file. Finished from new in white with
black trim, it left the factory equipped with a heater, radio, cigar lighter,
oil cooler and competition seats.
The early history of the car is unusually
well-documented. University Motors, one
of the most prestigious MG distributors of the period, supplied the car to its
first owner, who retained it for more than 19 years. During this time the MGA
was actively campaigned in the MG Car Club, racing between 1959 and 1962,
competing at Silverstone, Brands Hatch and Goodwood. Period notes and references
in the file support this, adding a welcome layer of genuine competition
provenance. Its original registration number, YXB 807, remains with the car to
this day.
The
second owner kept the MGA for over 42 years, preserving it with remarkable
continuity before passing it to the current custodian, who has held it for just
over four years, making this a very low-ownership example with a
particularly stable and traceable life.
As presented today, the car appears to be in
the final stages of long-term restoration, with fibreglass wings fitted front
and rear. The vendor tells us the car was on the road and in use prior to
being prepared for a re-paint. The engine bay looks largely complete and
well-ordered, while the underside and
suspension assemblies also appear to have been rebuilt to a good standard.
Accompanying the car are ten boxes of clean new and used parts, as photographed,
which should assist greatly in completing the project.
The history file is extensive and
contains a range of interesting documents, including the all-important Heritage Certificate
confirming both its Motor Show and University Motors origins. Combined with its
period MGCC racing history, this is a Twin-Cam of unusually rich
provenance.
Prospective buyers are encouraged to inspect
the car in person or study the photographs carefully to satisfy themselves as to
the remaining work required. A rare opportunity to complete a low-ownership, historically significant
Twin-Cam with both Motor Show and
competition pedigree.
