Lot Ended
Description
Imported to the UK in 1997 and just two owners since, the current for
26 years; only 72,300 miles with loads of service history; 200bhp 3.8 V6; LHD;
private plate included; running and driving nicely on site; be
different!
Launched in
1967, the Chevrolet Camaro was a direct response to Ford’s all-conquering
Mustang, sharing its platform and all major components with the Pontiac
Firebird, an example of which is elsewhere in this sale (Lot 61 – we also have a
Mustang, Lot 72).
Four distinct generations of
the Camaro were produced before production seemingly ended in 2002, although
after an eight-year break Chevrolet revived the Camaro name for the fabulous 5th
generation model which made a surprise appearance in 2010 and promptly won the
‘World Car Design of the Year’ award.
The 4th
generation, as here, ran from 1993 to 2002 and retained the traditional
two-door, 2+2 body style but with extensive use of plastics which not only kept
the weight down but also allowed the car to have a highly extrovert ‘shark nose’
without compromising the safety of other road users.
You don’t buy a Camaro to blend in with other traffic, you buy one to
stand out, and the sight of its predatory snout looming in the rear-view mirror
is enough to make most drivers clear out of your way pretty sharpish, the
muscular rear haunches only confirming that they made the right decision. This
thing looks like it is breaking the speed limit even when standing
still.
Built in 1996, this Camaro has the 200bhp
3.8 V6 engine mated to 4-speed automatic transmission which made it good for
0-60mph in 8.5 seconds with a top speed limited to 110mph and up to 34mpg
economy.
Imported from America in 1997, it has
had just two owners since, our vendor acquiring the car from American car
specialists Bauer Millett of Manchester in May 1999 with just 12,000 miles on
the clock, the invoice showing that he paid £11,995.
Now showing 72,276 miles, it has always been properly looked after
during our vendor’s 26-year ownership with tons of invoices for regular (almost
annual) servicing. For the last 15 years all the servicing has been carried out
by Ivan Purchase of West Midlands American Vehicles in Wolverhampton who knows
these cars inside-out.
In 2021 the front
suspension was rebuilt to address some MOT advisories and it has been serviced
three times since then, the last in July 2024 since when it has only covered
around 600 miles.
We are
told that it has always been very reliable and drives very well, the only faults
the vendor is aware of being the drooping headlining and the air con which needs
new seals because it is currently not holding gas. It has always worked fine
before. We are also told that it does about 30mpg on the motorway but rather
less around town - not bad for a 3.8.
It
has been starting promptly and driving nicely as we have hoofed it around our
yard, with no squeaks or rattles, a really comfortable ride and surprisingly
lively performance. It has an MOT until 16th August with just a few
minor advisories which you can see online. It also has a Tracker anti-theft
system fitted and two sets of keys.
As you can
see in the photos, it is in good condition for its age, although the engine bay
is rather grubby and would respond well to an afternoon’s worth of cleaning. It
also has an appropriate private number plate, N200 USA, which is transferable
and is included in the sale.
Our
vendor has now reached the age when he needs to slow down a bit and get
something rather less flamboyant to drive. He tried to gift this Camaro to his
grandson but he wasn’t too keen on the LHD bit, hence its appearance in this
sale.
On offer here at no reserve, this
much-loved slice of Nineties Americana looks like a lot of fun and will turn
heads wherever it goes.
