Lot Ended
Description
Ex-Home Office and Kent Fire Brigade; only 45,500 miles indicated;
current owner 13 years; 10/11-seater; driven 70 miles to the
sale
First registered
in November 1963, this Land Rover S2A 109” petrol was originally owned by The
Home Office with the registration number 187 ELM and was assigned to Kent Fire
Brigade in Maidstone in April 1997, remaining with them until 2003, according to
an old V5 on file (see last photo). Originally painted green, it was presumably
changed to red when it entered service with the Fire
Brigade.
Sadly it comes with no real history
other than 12 old MOTs which show the mileage rising very gently from 31,773 in
March 1997 to 38,994 in December 2010, the odometer currently showing 45,567
miles.
Our vendor (the 6th owner)
acquired the vehicle in January 2012 to join his small collection of Series Land
Rovers, his intention being to restore it and use it for shows because of its
low mileage (which he believes to be correct), its originality and interesting
history. Unfortunately a recent injury has left him unable to tackle this task,
hence its appearance in this sale.
A LWB 10/11
seater with original Safari roof top, it retains its original grey 'shark skin'
seat covers which would no doubt respond well to a good clean. As you can see in
the photos, it is in pretty decent shape for a 62-year-old, with just the odd
patch of corrosion emerging here and there on the steel inner door
frames.
We are told that it is in good shape
mechanically and was serviced fairly recently. It was driven to the sale from
Chester, the vendor reporting that: “It drove very well for the 70-mile
trip, mainly on quick main roads but I spent 20 miles on country roads going up
and down hills to do some sight-seeing. It has a good engine and gearbox, speed
was good, not many cars overtook me and none of the lorries did, although the
front left indicator lens did fly off somewhere along the
way!”.
Since arriving on site at Brightwells
it has unfortunately developed a fuel leak which has prevented us from driving
it on site. This appears to be coming from a seam joint at the bottom of the
tank and should be an easy fix but it does mean that the vehicle will need to be
trailered away rather than driven.
There are a
few spares in the back and the vendor tells us that he also has some other
spares that he will happily pass on to the new owner if they wish, including two
door tops and a rear cross member.
On offer here
at a modest guide price, this largely original and perhaps low-mileage S2A is
ready for a new owner to add their own chapter to its interesting life to date
and could be tidied up over time as desired.
