Lot Ended
Description
Few owners; only c,42,200 miles; lots of extras; driven 90 miles to
the sale
First registered
in January 1998, this Connaught Green Morgan 4/4 Two-Seater has the 114bhp Ford
1.8 Zetec 16v engine and 5-speed gearbox which makes it good for 0-60mph in 7.8
seconds with a top speed of 110mph – which feels more like 210mph in an
open-topped Morgan…
The original purchase
invoice shows that it cost £24,230 new including nearly £3,500 worth of extras:
15” chrome wire wheels; aluminium wings; galvanised chassis; green leather
upholstery piped in black; green PVC hood piped in black; walnut dash with green
leather centre switch panel; head restraints; passenger door mirror and, wait
for it, door handles! Yes, these really were a £65 option… (See last photo for
the full spec).
While the service section at the
back of the handbook is blank and unstamped, there are a fair few invoices to
show regular upkeep. Highlights include:
July
2002 – Short service plus gearbox oil change by Autocraft of Leigh-on-Sea at
8,845 miles
Jan 2003 – Full service by Autocraft
at 14,391 miles
April/July 2005 – Oil and filter
plus new timing belt, tensioners, idlers at c.36,700 miles
July 2005 – front suspension stripped and rebuilt by Melvyn
Rutter
March 2006 – Oil and filter at c. 39k
miles
Other invoices show that a new Everflex
spare wheel cover, wind deflectors and a stainless steel luggage rack were
fitted in 2003/04. Side screens and a beige tonneau cover are also present and a
battery cut-off switch is discreetly fitted behind the seats. A couple of period
sales brochures and a Melvyn Rutter parts catalogue are also
present.
13 old MOTs show the mileage rising from
8,848 in July 2002 to 40,510 in July 2016 shortly after which the car was taken
off the road and put into storage when the owner became ill.
Here it remained for the next 8 years, during
which time the speedo must have stopped working because when it was next MOT’d
in April 2024 it showed zero miles and in March 2025 it showed 1,349 miles. It
now shows 1,586 miles so the true total is uncertain but is most likely to be no
more than 42,200 miles.
The
current MOT is valid until April 2026 with no advisories recorded – nor did it
have any advisories from 2006 – 2016, hardly surprising as it only covered
around 1,500 miles during this 10-year period.
Our vendor (the fourth owner) acquired the car as a 'deceased
estate' purchase in October last year. This is the 12th Morgan that he
has owned in his long life and he tells us that the car runs and drives well but
advises that the fuel gauge hasn’t been working since it came out of storage so
that will need fixing. Driven 90 miles to the sale, it looks to be in generally
good condition and has been running and driving nicely on site.
Only for
sale because our vendor is down-sizing to a smaller house with
consequent loss of garage space, this low-mileage Morgan, with a long-term
previous owner, is on offer here at a very tempting guide price.
