example of this old school hot rod
Offering a unique blend of old
world charm and modern performance, the lightweight Morgan Plus 8 immediately
became Britain’s fastest accelerating production car when it was launched in
1968, sprinting to 60mph in a shade over 6 seconds.
It remained in
production for 36 years, gaining various improvements along the way, and by the
time production came to an end in 2004, around 6,000 had been sold.
First
registered in August 1988, this Plus 8 has the more powerful 190bhp
fuel-injected SD1 Vitesse engine mated to Rover’s LT77 5-speed all-synchro
manual gearbox and a limited slip diff which made it quicker than the Porsche
911 of the time, cracking the 0-60mph time in around 5.6 seconds although the
top speed was somewhat lower at 125mph.
It comes with an excellent
history file from new including an album of photos, signed by Peter Morgan
himself, showing the car being built at the Malvern factory. The original
purchase invoice shows that it was supplied new via Morgan agent Mike Duncan of
Halesowen, costing £17,947 including special order Morgan Ivory paintwork, black
leather interior and all-aluminium body.
It has had just three owners to
date, the first keeping it for 15 years, the second for four years (2003 – 2007)
and our vendor has owned it for 18 years. It has covered only 65,088 miles with
an excellent service history comprising 16 stamps in the book with invoices and
notes from the vendor confirming another eight services which gives 24
services in total, the last in May this year since when it has
only covered 200 miles. That equates to an average service interval of just
2,700 miles – pretty impressive by any standards!
There are also many
invoices for additional upkeep and new parts fitted, stand-out items
including: four new Dunlop tyres at 54k miles in 2013; new uprated alloy
radiator and fan in 2017; new front shock absorbers and gear selector bushes in
2022. Most recently, in July this year it had new king pins and bushes, new
front brake discs, pads and reconditioned calipers.
Other features of
note include a stainless steel exhaust system; folding windscreen and aero
screens; stainless steel side mirror; black vinyl hood, tonneau cover and spare
wheel cover, all in good condition; stainless steel luggage rack; battery
cut-off switch and two sets of keys.
There are no fewer than 32 old
MOTs, the current being valid until August 2026 with no advisories recorded. It
will become MOT-exempt when it hits 40 in three years’ time.
Driven to
the sale from Malvern, this impeccably maintained Plus 8 is in super condition
for its year/mileage and has been starting promptly and driving very nicely
indeed as we have moved it around on site. The icing on the cake is the MOG
number plate which is included with the car.
