Three owners from new, the current for 30 years; only 65,150 miles;
always kept gargaged and lightly used; driven 40 miles to the auction; new
battery; scope for cosmetic improvement
First registered in August
1985, this Mercedes 280SL has had just three owners from new, our vendor
acquiring the car back in 1996 from another lady in Cheshire who had owned it
since it was just one year old. It shows only 65,153 miles on the speedo which
we are assured is correct, six old MOTs showing that it has only covered some
4,000 miles since 2010.
Although there is no service
book, there are a few invoices for routine upkeep during our vendor’s 30-year
ownership, including services in November 2015 at c.63,500 miles, another in
December 2018 at 64,229 miles and another in November 2019 at 64,371 miles which
included new front and rear brake calipers and a new set of brake
pads.
There is also an invoice for a
steam clean of the underside in June 2011 along with repairs to the sills and
inner wheel arches and waxoil treatment. Most recently, it had a new battery in
June this year just prior to the auction.
Very lightly used in the
current 30-year ownership, we are told that it has always been kept garaged when
not in use. As you can see in the photos, it looks to be in decent shape for a
40-year-old with just the odd blemish here and there.
An owner’s handbook
is present along with a couple of agreed value insurance certificates, the last
for £10,000 in May 2010 at 61,098 miles.
Driven some 40 miles to the
sale, it has been starting promptly and running well as we have moved it around
on site. On offer here at a modest guide price, this low mileage Mercedes 107
Series seems eminently usable as it is and could be smartened up over time as
desired.
