Extensively restored Series I; award winner; gearbox fitted with
syncro slickshift conversion; P38 power steering fitted; drove to Cornwall
and back last year
Early 80in Land Rovers are
among the most collectible of Series I’s. FRV 696 is a great example that
combines authentic Series I character with a remarkably high standard of
restoration and thoughtful upgrades.
Completed in
time for the Land Rover Series One National Rally in Devon last year, the
vehicle first undertook a successful touring trip to Cornwall from the Midlands
before attending the event, where it was awarded the coveted New Restoration Cup
- a testament to the quality of the work carried out.
The chassis has been restored to an impressive standard, including a
replacement rear crossmember, removable gearbox crossmember and provision for
power steering.
The bulkhead has undergone a
comprehensive rebuild aswell as the dashboard having been fully restored. Mechanical
improvements include new brakes throughout, an Autosparks wiring loom, LOF
clutch with pedal assist, alternator upgrade, stainless steel fuel tank and
electric cooling fan.
Perhaps most notable are
the carefully integrated usability enhancements. Power steering is provided by a
P38 Range Rover box with a Volvo electric hydraulic pump featuring
GPS-controlled speed adjustment, while LED lighting has been discreetly
incorporated using original-style fittings.
Further upgrades include a Gwyn Lewis competition rear propshaft,
Optima Red Top battery, new canvas hood and new tubeless wheels fitted with
Goodyear Wrangler tyres.
Showing five former
keepers, the vehicle is accompanied by a wealth of restoration detail and
presents very well throughout. Prospective purchasers should note that HPI
incorrectly records the engine capacity as 2,598cc; the vehicle is fitted with
the correct 1,997cc engine as per the current V5C.
An award winning restoration of one of the most desirable Land Rover
models ever produced, ready to be enjoyed, shown and
admired.
