Replacing the much-loved Topolino of
the 1940s, Dante Giacosa's 'Nuova 500' came out in 1957 and remained a
brilliant little car long into the 1970s thanks to its endearing design and
unparalleled suitability for city life. Its minuscule dimensions and
feather-light weight made it incredibly nimble, perfect for navigating narrow
streets and squeezing into impossibly tight parking spots.
Powered by an
air-cooled, two-cylinder engine, it was famously economical to run and
surprisingly robust. More than just practical, the
'Cinquecento' embodied a charming, democratic spirit, offering affordable
personal mobility to millions. Its cheerful styling and roll-back
fabric roof cemented its status as a timeless symbol of 'La Dolce
Vita'.
Dating from 1969, this super LHD Fiat 500 was imported to the UK
in September 2011 and has had just two owners since, our vendor acquiring the
car in July 2012.
Over the last few years our
vendor has been busy restoring this car as a project to keep him busy in his
retirement, incorporating various upgrades along the way. Although there are no
invoices to show the extent of the work carried out, the vendor has kindly
supplied the following description:
“This car
has received many improvements. It is fitted with a 650cc engine with electronic
ignition and the gearbox has been rebuilt with new internals and a new clutch.
The drive shafts have been suitably uprated.
The bodywork has been restored as required, including new floor
pans and sills. It has had a professional glass-out repaint and new bumpers and
window rubbers fitted.
The interior has
been re-trimmed by an ex-Morgan trimmer including leather upholstery, new
carpets and inertia-reel seatbelts. It also has a wood-rim steering wheel
(original wheel included), a fabric sunroof and hazard warning
lights.”
As you can see in the photos, this
freshly rejuvenated and judiciously uprated Fiat looks a million dollars and has
been starting easily and running very nicely indeed as we have moved it around
on site.
Gamely on offer at no reserve, it needs
to be seen and heard to be fully appreciated so make sure you come and view
it!
